Frequently Asked Questions

Ordering

Should I order extra for wastage?

It is commonly recommend to order an additional 10% to allow for cuts and wastage. This prevents any hold ups on the project should any products get accidentally broken or damaged. This applies particularly to both paving and composite decking and cladding, where off-cuts cannot be re-used elsewhere on the project.

It is good practice to order an extra 10 to 20cm of artificial grass to allow for an easier installation as it gives the flexibility to adjust the grass in to position for accurate cuts.

Can I order specific amounts?

Absolutely! Landscaping Direct’s Own range of paving can be ordered in full and split packs, allowing you to order a quantity suited to your project to avoid excess cost and waste. Paving from other brands is available to split on request. Please get in touch directly and we’ll be happy to advise the overall price and lead time.

Composite decking and cladding can be ordered per individual length to give you ultimate control.

Similarly, artificial grass can be ordered in lengths at 0.1 metre increments to give you complete flexibility.

Why don't split packs of paving include free delivery?

With full packs of paving, delivery is 'free' as the delivery cost is included in the price of the pack rather than being charged separately.

However, split packs incur the exact same cost to deliver as a full pack would, as couriers charge for that space whether the pack/pallet was full, half full or empty.

Rather than adding the same delivery charge back on to the split-pack price, we feel that it is much clearer and transparent to list it separately,

Some other suppliers prefer to bundle the delivery costs back in to the price of the split quantity, which is completely fine, we just feel it is a little more confusing as it distorts the price per M2.

Both methods result in the exact same delivered total, we just feel listing the delivery charge separately is clearer and makes it easier to price a project when looking at it.

For example, showing Paving XYZ as £30.00/M2 regardless of M2 required, with a £90.00 delivery charge for a split pack (when required) is much clearer than:

Paving XYZ - 1M2 split pack = £120.00/M2

Paving XYZ - 2M2 split pack = £75.00/M2

Paving XYZ - 3M2 split pack = £60.00/M2

Paving XYZ - 4M2 split pack = £52.50M2

Paving XYZ - 5M2 split pack = £48.00/M2

Paving XYZ - 6M2 split pack = £45.00/M2

.and so on...

Other websites' split packs include delivery, does that make them cheaper?

In a nut shell, no.

Whether the split packs have a £90 delivery charge added in to the price, or whether a £90 delivery charge is listed separately at the end, the total price is ultimately the same.

For example:

A competitor listing split packs including delivery as:is the same asLandscaping Direct listing the charge separately
Paving XYZ - 1M2 split pack = £120/M2 = £120 deliveredis the same as1M2 x £30/M2 = £30 + £90 delivery = £120 delivered
Paving XYZ - 2M2 split pack = £75/M2 = £150 deliveredis the same as2M2 x £30/M2 = £60 + £90 delivery = £150 delivered
Paving XYZ - 3M2 split pack = £60/M2 = £180 deliveredis the same as3M2 x £30/M2 = £90 + £90 delivery = £180 delivered
Paving XYZ - 4M2 split pack = £52.50/M2 = £210 deliveredis the same as4M2 x £30/M2 = £120 + £90 delivery = £210 delivered
Paving XYZ - 5M2 split pack = £48/M2 = £240 deliveredis the same as5M2 x £30/M2 = £150 + £90 delivery = £240 delivered

We find that listing the delivery charge separately is more transparent and makes pricing projects much easier - particularly without needing to reference the website for a split pack cost.

Ultimately, it makes no differenct to the total price whether the delivery charge is built in or not, but listing it separately does gice you more transparency and the ability to price more easily - as detailed below should you wish to drill in to the maths and logic.

EXAMPLE - Split Pack Delivery Charge Listed Separately (The Landscaping Direct method)

Paving XYZ is £30 per M2. A full pack contains 20M2. The amount of paving you require is 25M2.

When pricing you can simply do 25M2 x £30/M2 = £750 + £90 delivery charge for the split pack = £840 total.

If your quantity increased to 30M2, you can quickly do 30M2 x £30/M2 = £900 + £90 delivery charge for the split pack = £990 total.

EXAMPLE - Split Pack Delivery Charge Included (Many Competitors' method)

Similarly, Paving XYZ is £30 per M2. A full pack contains 20M2. The amount of paving you require is 25M2.

As the competitor does not show how much the delivery charge is, there is no way of you being able to calculate how much the price of the paving is without checking their website for the cost of a 5M2 split pack.

If your quantity increased to 30M2, again, you can't quickly calculate the total for this without checking the website for a 10M2 split pack.

Of course referring to the website isn't necessarily difficult if you have it to hand, but pricing a project on the spot without checking the website isn't otherwise possible.

Try it out for yourself...

A full pack of Paving ABC is £500. There's 20M2 in a full pack. That's £25/M2.

On a competitor's site, without knowing how much of that price is delivery or how much the competitor charges for delivery. How much is a 12M2 split pack for your project?

Answer: Impossible to know.

Now, how much is the same Paving ABC from Landscaping Direct for 12M2, knowing that we charge a consistent price per M2 for the paving, regardless of quantity, plus a £90 delivery charge on a split pack?

Answer: 12 x 25 = £300 + £90 = £390.

Do you have any displays I could visit?

We don’t currently have any showrooms or display areas at the moment. We can however send some samples directly to you for you to check out any products you’re interested in. If you’re looking for ideas and inspiration, feel free to get in touch to discuss products that might suit your needs.

Can I get some samples?

Absolutely! We encourage you to check out our products when comparing to others’. We’re confident that we have some of the best products on the market and we’d be glad to show you so you can agree.

Simply add any samples that you’re interested in to your basket and complete the checkout process. We’ll get your free samples packaged up and posted out pronto.

Will the product I receive be the exact same as the sample?

The samples we send out are cut pieces of the actual product to give you the best possible representation of colour and texture possible. However, naturally, products can and do change from batch to batch.

No two stone products are ever the same, and the natural variation in colours and markings do change as new batches are extracted. Similarly, man-made products such as composites, grass and porcelain can vary slightly between batches.

Will the product look just like in the photos on the website?

The images across our site are of the actual products so that you can see how wonderful they look. However, variables such as lighting, camera quality and screen resolution can never give a true representation to how good the products look to the naked eye.

Delivery Advice

How will my paving be delivered?

We use third-party couriers to delivery our products nationwide. This service is based on delivering kerb-side to the nearest point of access to your property that it is safe to do so. Delivery vehicles are typically 18 ton HGVs, so sufficient access to the address with a hard-standing surface to offload on are required.

Paving is delivered in crates or on a pallet, with a tail offload vehicle using a pump truck to pull the paving in to position. The driver may be able to pull the product on to your driveway if requested, although it is solely at the driver’s discretion as to whether the conditions are appropriate, and it is safe to do so.

How will my artificial grass be delivered?

We use third-party couriers to delivery our products nationwide. This service is based on delivering kerb-side to the nearest point of access to your property that it is safe to do so. Delivery vehicles are typically 18 ton HGVs, so sufficient access to the address with a hard-standing surface to offload on are required.

Artificial grass is delivered as a large roll. The roll itself is too heavy for just one person to lift, so to ensure that it does not get damaged, we request that somebody is available to assist the driver with the offload. Ancillary products such as pins, tape and glue are generally dispatched separately to the main products to avoid getting damaged or lost in transit with the rolls. These will be delivered much like an ordinary parcel would.

How will my composite decking, cladding or fencing be delivered?

Composite decking, cladding and fencing are best offloaded by hand due to the length and weight of the products. Because of this, we request that somebody is available on the delivery day to assist the driver with offload to prevent the products getting damaged.

Landscaping Direct’s Own range of composite products are delivered by a ‘man and van’, allowing more flexibility in terms of access and offload.

For composite products from other brands, we use third-party couriers to delivery our products nationwide. This service is based on delivering kerb-side to the nearest point of access to your property that it is safe to do so. Delivery vehicles are typically 18 ton HGVs, so sufficient access to the address with a hard-standing surface to offload on are required.

In either instance, we kindly request that somebody is available on the delivery day to assist with offloading.

Can the goods be delivered in to my garden?

Where third-party couriers are used, the delivery is based on a kerb-side only service. However, certain drivers may be willing to help deliver on to your property at their discretion should the conditions allow this to be done safely and reasonably.

Any deliveries made beyond kerbside are done so strictly between the customer and the haulier.

Can I get the delivery craned into my garden or over a fence?

Unfortunately we don’t yet offer a hiab or crane vehicle delivery service.

Do I need to be home to accept delivery?

We do request that somebody is available at the address on the day of delivery. This is to help assist the driver with offload where required and also to ensure that the goods get delivered in good condition and there are no errors.

Should my installer be there for delivery?

We recommend that the installer isn’t booked in to fit the products until they have been delivered. This is to avoid any lost-time and associated costs should there be any unexpected issues or delays.

Where do/don't you deliver to?

Currently, we only deliver to mainland UK excluding some harder-to-reach postcodes.

We have tried to 'block' British Isles postcodes we don't deliver to, to avoid the inconvenience of having to cancel and refund an order we can't fulfil.

The current 'blocked' locations include:

GY - Guernsey

JE - Jersey

BT - Northern Ireland

IE - Republic of Ireland

IM - Isle of Man

ZE - Lerwick/Shetland

KW - North East Scotland / Orkney Islands

IV - Inverness

HS - Outer Hebrides

PO30-40 - Isle of Wight

TR21-25 - Isles of Scilly

All Eircodes - Ireland

Map of UK showing available zones in green, and zones we don't deliver to in red - as described above.

Do any postcode zones have surcharges?

Unfortunately, our couriers do charge additional haulage for deliveries to postcodes further away.

On full and split packs of paving, the below surcharges apply per pack.

Postcode ZoneAdditional shipping charge:
AB,DD,FK,IV,KY,PA,PH,TR£65 inc. VAT per pack
CA,CF,DG,DT,EH,EX,G,KA,LD,LL,ML,PL,SA,SY,TA,TD,TQ£25 inc. VAT per pack
What ensures a smoother delivery?

There are a few easy factors which can help achieve a successful delivery:

The most important factor is to ensure that a large lorry can get to your property. Parked cars, tight streets, obstructive trees, etc. are the main disruptors to a delivery.

Most deliveries are typically made on an 18-tonne lorry which is 12 metres long, 2.8 metres wide and 4 metres high. Please advise if there are any accessibility issues when placing your order. Alternative 7.5 tonne vehicles can be arranged where access is restricted – these lorries measure approximately 8.8 x 2.5 x 3.5. (Please note that there may be additional charges and delays to your order if an alternative vehicle needs to be arranged.)

Similarly, the ground conditions are important to consider. The lorry needs to be able to offload on hard, level ground to avoid complications. Where a pallet truck is to be used to manoeuvre pallets and crates, the ground also needs to be flat and solid. Gravel, or pot-holed surfaces for instance can limit the ability to deliver the goods where required.

Prior notice of the above can help the courier to determine an alternative route or vehicle be used for first time completion, whereas failure to do so may result in delays and potential re-delivery charges if the goods cannot be delivered at the next best suitable area. In most cases, there tends not to be an issue, and the driver will endeavour to deliver your goods to the next-best suitable area if first choice isn’t possible.

What if delivery can’t be made?

If the delivery could not be made due to the customer, for example, failing to advise of access issues, not being home to accept delivery or the conditions for offload not being suitable, then there may be re-delivery charges incurred for further delivery attempts.

If the delivery could not be made due to, for example, road closures, vehicle breakdown, etc. then you will be advised at the earliest opportunity and re-delivery will be re-scheduled at no further cost to yourself. For the reasons mentioned above, this is an example of why we highly recommend not booking an installer until goods are received.

What if my delivery arrives damaged?

We ensure that all products are dispatched in a damage-free condition, however there is a chance that they become damaged during transportation.

Upon delivery, please check thoroughly for any damages before signing for receipt.

If you find that any of the goods are damaged, please note on the driver’s POD machine / paperwork “damaged”, take photos and let us know straight away so that we can resolve any issues. If you are unable to check for damages at the time of delivery, please sign as “unchecked” and check afterwards – advising us within 24 hours of any issues.

Any damages will need to be reported to the courier within 24 hours or else they will consider the delivery as accepted in a satisfactory condition.

Typically, broken pieces of paving, decking, etc. are often still usable and can be used for cut sections of the project. This is generally factored in to a 10% allowance for cuts, damage and wastage when measuring and ordering.

In any instance, taking photos and sending them to us at the earliest opportunity helps us to find the right solution. Delays in letting us know of any issues does make it difficult to establish cause and find a simple resolution.

There is an issue with my delivery. What should I do?

If you have any issues with your delivery, whether that be damages or errors, etc. please contact us straight away so we can find a quick resolution for you.

It is more difficult to deal with product issues once the product has been installed, so please contact us prior to using the goods in any way. If you feel that there is an issue with the product, yet you go ahead and install the product anyway, you are deemed as accepting of the goods and you may have less recourse afterwards.

If there has been a mistake with your order, the material arrives to site damaged, is faulty, not fit for purpose or not as described you have 30 days from the day of delivery to arrange a return.

Returns / Cancellations

Can I return my order if I change my mind?

You do have the right to cancel your order up to 14 days from the date the goods are delivered should you change your mind.

If you wish to exercise your right to cancel within 14 days, it is your responsibility to arrange the return haulage - please get in touch with us directly for us to advise the correct return address. The addresses listed on our site are postal address only. No products or offload facilities are available, so you would likely incur additional charges from the haulier for re-direction to the correct address.

The products must be returned in the same condition and original packaging that they were delivered in for a full refund or exchange for the materials.

We will issue your refund within 14 days of the goods being returned.

What if I need to return my order?

Hopefully you shouldn’t have to, but if for whatever reason you need to return your order, we can accept it providing the following:

  • A request to return the goods is made within 14 days of receipt.
  • The goods are in the original condition in which they were delivered.
  • The products are not cut-to-size, split packs or bespoke in any way.
  • The goods have not been used or installed in any way.
  • The goods need to be easily accessible for a courier to collect in the same way they were delivered - i.e able to access and manoeuvre via pump truck for crates/pallets, otherwise the courier may refuse collection but costs are still incurred.

It is the responsibility of the customer to arrange the return at their expense.

Beyond the statutory 14 day returns/cancellation period, any returns which are accepted may be subject to a re-stocking charge.

If applicable, shortages, transport costs and split-pack costs incurred by Landscaping Direct may be deducted from the refund amount.

Once the returned products are received by us, they will be checked for condition and a refund arranged. Please allow up to 14 days for this process.

Ethics

Are your products ethically sourced?

Landscaping Direct are committed to providing only ethically sourced products.

Landscaping Direct are FSC® certified, meaning that we are part of a chain that ensures the responsible and sustainable sourcing of timber within our products.

Our paving is sourced from suppliers who maintain ethical conditions throughout the supply chain, ensuring fair pay, safe working conditions and no child labour.

Why is ethically sourced important?

Knowing that your paving is from an ethical source should give you peace of mind that the products in your garden are not from quarries exploiting children and using slave labour.

Unfortunately, forced labour, poor working conditions and generally inhumane treatment is prevalent in developing countries. Landscape Direct and our suppliers ensure that the products we supply are from only chains that maintain ethical standards – providing fair wages and conditions to employees.

Is ethically sourced stone more expensive?

Naturally, by paying fairer wages and investing in safer conditions there are costs in the background which do contribute to ethically sourced stone being more expensive versus stone which has come from unethical profiteers. However, we feel that the added quality and longevity of the stone, and the social and humanitarian benefits we contribute to by sourcing ethically and responsibility is more than worth it given the marginal difference it costs.

What is FSC® and why is that important?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.

FSC® forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability.

By being FSC®-certified, we are helping to ensure all of the timber products and timber-based products we sell are from a responsible and sustainable source, helping to protect our planet’s forests.
